Half price water butts

Braintree households top Essex County Council water butt purchases

A wet spring is a great time to invest in a water butt. Harvesting rain water can help keep your garden green during dry summer months and, if you have a water meter, can save you money too.

Essex County Council offers residents half price water butts and BDC are really proud to announce that Braintree tops the charts in terms of purchases, with 200 bought in the last year. The second highest number was in Tendring, at 86.

If you haven’t got one already, now’s a good time to buy one – they’re really easy to install, blend into the background and come in a range of sizes to suit all gardens.

Engines off when you drop off

Engines Off when you Drop Off asks parents to stop idling cars outside schools

According to Essex Air, the main source of air pollution in Braintree is road traffic. Idling – where a car’s engine is left running while it is stationary – contributes to this problem and is often at its worst outside schools. Children are especially vulnerable to the effects of idling, as their lungs are still developing.

Our Engines Off when you Drop Off campaign invites schools to help us tackle this problem by downloading our toolkit, which contains lots of activities and information to get the whole school community involved.

Your child’s school may ask you to make a pledge to stop idling your car outside school. When you pledge, we will email you a digital certificate. Once your child’s school receives 50 pledges, they will be awarded a special digital badge to show that they are idling aware.

Ask your child’s school if they are taking part!

Asian Hornets

Asian hornets: your help needed to track invasive species

The Chief Plant Health Officer is asking beekeepers and members of the public to be extra vigilant and report sightings of the Asian hornet using an online tool from the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

The Asian hornet is smaller and darker than the European hornet. It poses no greater risk to human health than our native wasps and hornets, but does pose a risk to honey bees and insect pollinators. It feeds on native bees and wasps, which can damage biodiversity.

It can be identified by its very dark body, wide orange stripe on the fourth abdomen section and yellow leg ends.

Numbers are on the rise in the UK but the species is not yet established here. Early trapping is crucial to controlling numbers, and by reporting sightings you can help with that.

Natinal Highways plan to carry out essential resurfacing work on the A120 eastbound between Dunmow south and Notley Green. This will ensure the A120 continues to remain in a safe and serviceable condition.

The work will be completed over three nights between Wednesday 19 June and Saturday 22 June, working between 8pm and 6am, weather conditions permitting.

Closure and diversion
