Did you know that over 1,200 fires last year were caused by batteries?
Councils across the country are reporting their lorries catching fire, putting people at risk.
These fires are often caused by hidden batteries inside electricals. When these electricals are thrown away, the batteries can get crushed by the compactor on the collection vehicle and ignite.
Never put loose batteries or any electricals in your rubbish or recycling collections.
Instead, recycle batteries by taking them to your local Essex County Council recycling centre or find your nearest collection point here (the site refers to them as ‘portable batteries’).
Always recycle your electricals (WEEE) as they may contain batteries, and will be made from precious resources that can be re-used for new electronics. You can find your nearest collection point for these here.
This includes smaller electrical items, like toothbrushes, shavers, chargers and toys, which often break and get thrown out with their hidden batteries still inside.
Following the results of the public consultation made public in January, Essex County Council is pleased to share the outcome of the Local Bus 2023/2024 tender round.
Please find attached a document detailing all the changes and updates in respect of operators and routes.
The following opportunity has been received from Braintree District Council. If you are interested, please contact BDC direct as shown in the text.
In a few weeks’ time, on 4 July, we will be running the Election for the Witham and Braintree Parliamentary Constituencies.  There is an opportunity to be part of the team and we are currently in the process of filling the very many number of posts that are required for the running of an election. The roles that we are currently looking for are Presiding Officers, Poll Clerks or you may wish to join us to deliver the count itself.
The roles are summarised below:
Presiding Officer: As a Presiding Officer you would be responsible for complying with all instructions and ensuring the integrity and secrecy of the ballot.  Polling stations are open from 7am until 10pm.  You will assign work to Poll Clerk(s) and collecting and delivering the ballot box to the count venue and you may have responsibility for ensuring your polling building is open and closed on the day.  Training is provided beforehand which can be done in your own time online and you would be paid £310+ for the work.
Poll Clerk: As a Poll Clerk, you would assist the Presiding Officer to run a polling station, helping set up polling station equipment, assist issuing ballot papers to members of the public, marking the electoral register and assist in the accurate completion of paperwork.  Training is provided beforehand which can be done in your own time online and you would be paid £240+ for the work.
Count Staff: you will be part of the team verifying and counting the votes from 10pm onwards at the count venue. We expect to run through until around 4am but it can go on longer if the results are close. The hourly rate is £15.00, or £22.50 after 11pm.
If you would like to know more about the election process and what’s involved please get in touch with our Elections team by emailing elections@braintree.gov.uk They will be able to provide information about the roles and additional money you can earn for being part of the team.   Also, if you are aware of anyone who would like to get involved, or has an interest in the election process, please feel free to pass on our details. Everyone is welcome, all we ask is that they are over 18 years, and are not involved with the political parties and their election campaigning,
