NHS advice – be prepared for winter

Be prepared for winter – NHS advice to keep you and your loved ones healthy

As the colder months approach, it’s time to take action to protect your health and the health of your loved ones. The NHS in mid and south Essex is encouraging everyone to ‘Be Prepared for Winter’ by following key health advice early in the season.

Key steps to take:

Get vaccinated:

Make sure you and your family are up to date with flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccinations if you’re eligible. These vaccines are particularly important for older adults, people with underlying health conditions, and pregnant women. For more information on seasonal vaccinations, eligibility, and how to get your vaccine, visit the Mid and South Essex Vaccination Hub.

Practice self-care: Keep your medicine cabinet stocked and know how to manage minor illnesses at home. For non-urgent concerns, your local pharmacy is the best first stop. Pharmacists can offer advice and treatment without an appointment and may even be able to provide prescription medication through the Pharmacy First scheme, saving you a trip to the GP.

Essex Frontline is another useful tool, connecting you to local services that can help with staying warm, managing energy bills, accessing food, and healthcare.

Looking after your mental health and boosting your immune system: Winter can affect our mental wellbeing, so it’s important to stay connected, active, and mindful. A balanced diet and regular exercise are key to boosting your immune system, and don’t forget to stay hydrated, even during the colder months.

Eating a nutritious, balanced diet and staying physically active are vital for supporting your immune system. Even in colder weather, try to incorporate fruits, vegetables, and regular exercise into your daily routine. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, as staying hydrated is essential for your overall health and helps prevent dehydration, which can weaken your immune system.

Prevent falls: If you or someone you care for is older, take steps to prevent falls this winter. For more tips and resources, visit the Preventing Falls and Staying Well Guide, developed in partnership with Active Essex.

Braintree Local Plan update

Update received from Braintree District Council

Local Plan update 17 09 2024

Following the meeting of the Local Plan Sub-Committee yesterday (Monday,16 September 2024), a revised timetable for the Local Plan Review has been approved. This comes after the announcement of the government’s proposed planning reforms which is giving local authorities until December 2026 to submit an up-to-date plan compared to the previous deadline of June 2025.

The revised timetable includes a further round of public consultation in the New Year, known as ‘Issues and Options’, which will engage residents on the key issues and challenges facing the district and a set of ideas and solutions to tackle these through planning policies. Statutory consultations will follow in 2025 and 2026, known as ‘Preferred Options’ and ‘Pre-Submission’, prior to submitting a revised plan to the planning inspectorate for examination by June 2026 and adoption in December 2026.

A120 Marks Farm Roundabout – road marking renewals

National Highways plan to carry out renewal of road markings on the A120 Marks Farm Roundabout. Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, better-defined road surface.

They plan to complete this work over one night on Friday 20 September and will work between 8pm to 6am, weather permitting.

Closures and diversions

To carry out the work safely, they need to close the A120 westbound between Marks Farm Roundabout and Galleys Corner Roundabout, and divert traffic as follows:

Eastbound traffic will be diverted off the A12 at junction 25 to travel south on the A12 to junction 19 at Boreham. Drivers will then leave the A12 at junction 19 and head northwards on the A131 to rejoin the eastbound A120 at Panners Interchange.

Westbound traffic will use the diversion in reverse.

A 4-way traffic light system on Marks Farm roundabout will be in operation.
