Globally, a third of the food we produce gets thrown away. Food waste isn’t just contributing to climate change – it’s hitting our pockets too! Per year, the average Essex household throws away £720 of food that could have been eaten.

36 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions could be prevented by saving food from our bins in UK homes
You may have heard that food has a big environmental impact. But how does the odd overripe banana or stale loaf of bread being binned harm our planet?
Research undertaken by WRAP in June 2020 showed that 81% of citizens were concerned about climate change, however only 37% realised the connection with wasting food.
There is a huge environmental impact caused by food going to waste. Not only the harmful greenhouse gases created by producing food that isn’t used, or even from the food rotting in landfill, it’s also the waste of all the precious resources that it takes to bring that food to your plate – the land, water, energy and hard work (not to mention love and care!).
If we can make sure only the food we are going to eat reaches our homes, and no good food ends up in the bin, we could save the emissions created producing that food from ever needing to be created in the first place.
Ensuring you use up all of the food you buy and let none of it go to waste is a key way to reduce your carbon footprint and help tackle climate change.
Discover some simple hacks, tips and guidance to make the most of your food at home. Find out why it’s so crucial that we all do our bit to save our food from the bin – and protect our beautiful planet at the same time too.
